The Wild Kangaroos of Glenbrook

New South Wales

The Glenbrook entrance of Blue Mountain National Park is famed for its wild herd of gray kangaroos.

"Kangaroos are reallly very cool. These were gray roos, which are maybe five to six feet tall at most, as opposed to the seven- or eight-foot-tall [red] roos we're likely to see when we get out by Alice Springs and Uluru. They were quite unafraid of us, though we very intelligently made no effort to get close enough to touch them, which we couldn't have anyway because they'd just hop away.

"There were maybe two dozen of them just lazing around in a meadow and munching grass, and we saw several with joeys, including a few in pouches, plus a bit of male competition. ("Hey, buddy, get the hell away from her! She's mine, and I'm bigger than you!") Meanwhile, big, white cockatoos were all over the place, hanging around the roos and generally being beautiful. Toni [our guide] went off in search of snakes, for which she seemed to have an affinity. She didn't find any that day." - Larry the O mlog

A Typical Day for the Roo Clan

Top left, a roo in the air; their leaping ability is every bit as amazing as you've heard. The female at middle row, left, is staying cool by washing her hands.
