Tjapukai Cultural Park

Queensland

Opened in July 1998, this modest, tasteful complex includes a theater and several exhibits. Located in Caravonica, a about 15 minutes north of Cairns, it is the eastern terminus of the Scenic Skyway.

"When we got to the bottom [of the Scenic Skyway], we walked next door to the Tjapukai Cultural Park. This is a center about and operated by the Aboriginal locals, the Tjapukai. A dance demonstration, digeridoo demo, bush tucker (bush food) talk, and spear chucking (a lot harder than it looks). I often don't like artificial environments and 'cultural villages' but the Aussies do a fair job of it all. The woman in the gift shop there made a huge breakthrough in finally getting me to make a sound with a digeridoo that didn't make every cow in the country run for their lives. I can't say I can play the instrument now, but I understand the first step, anyway." - Larry the O mlog
