Birdworld

Queensland

Kuranda is a mountain-rainforest village located on the northwest edge of Barron Gorge National Park in Queensland, about 11 km of twisty mountain road northwest of Cairns. Tourism is the town's main business, and the amount and quality of food and crafts is impressive. Kuranda apparently has a significant population of American hippie expatriates. You can drive to Kuranda or reach it on the Scenic Railroad or Scenic Skyway.

At the rear of the central crafts market is a bird exhibit called Birdworld Kuranda. Although it features numerous Australian birds, the collection includes several exotic birds from other continents.

"The woman from the tour company, an Israeli who had move to Cairns to get away from desert, offered us free admission to one of the Kuranda attractions, Birdworld, to make up for the earlier problem. We took her up on the offer and it turned out to be quite something.

"Australia is, indeed, a wild and wonderful chunk of planet, and the birds are brighter, more colorful, more weird and fantastic, and louder than anywhere else I've been. We very much enjoyed the time we spent in that Birdworld country." - Larry the O mlog

I hope to eventually identify all of the birds on this page. Top row far left is a rail of some sort, and the bird in the top row at far right looks like a Sacred Kingfisher. In the middle row, the redhead hiding in the log appears to be a Lorikeet. Bottom row, left: Sun Conure. If you can identify any of these birds, please email me.
